I have read many topics on various sites and I am a bit confused on how I am supposed to set it up with my win. 98se comp.
If you have time and are kind enough could you please write a understandable step by step way of setting this up.

ok thanks ive seen that many times but can i use that with the standard equipment that came with my iPod... And to update it I should go to a friends with windows xp right? (do I have to run the updater before i can put songs on)

What do you mean by "equipment"? Your iPod (then yes)? Enclosed Software (then no)?
