Hey folks,

Well, two weeks ago my 40 GB Click-Wheel iPod died, so I sent it in for service. I got my replacement today, and the following happened:

1) First wanted to charge it, so immediately plugged into AC adapter. As soon as I plugged it in, I get the Apple Symbol, then I hear "whirrr...click...whirrrr...click" and get the exclamation with folder symbol.

2) Turn on Windows XP machine. Open up iPod Updater (the latest one from March 2005), and it tells me to connect iPod. Plug in iPod to USB 2.0 cable. I see the usual Windows popups "Found New Hardware" then "Found Mass Storage Device" then "Found iPod". Then I get an error message saying there was a problem and the device may not work properly. Then the iPod Updater says "Can't MOunt iPod".

3) Restart Machine. Plug in Firewire cable. Open iPod Updater. Plug in iPod, and get a popup that tells me to restart my machine for the new service that has been installed.

4) Restart Machine. Plug in Firewire cable. Open iPod Updater. Plug in iPod and nothing happens. iPod cycles from Apple Symbol, to Exclamation Mark Symbol, to "Do Not Disconnect" back to Apple Symbol over and over again. On "My Computer" it shows a new drive showing up for a split second, then it disappears. Twenty seconds later, it re-appears, then a split second later, disappears. Eventually, iPod Updater says "Can't Mount iPod"

5) I try restarting the machine and trying USB 2.0, then I restart and try Firewire in Disk Mode, then I try restarting the machine and trying USB 2.0 in Disk Mode. None of them work, all end up just like Step 4, in an endless cycle of Apple Symbol, then Exclamation Mark, then Do Not Disconnect, back to Apple Symbol.

Aaaargh! I can't believe it is dead, as I just received it from Apple!!!! Anyone here have any ideas? They are shipping me a return box, but if someone here has some ideas, I would rather have my iPod work than have to wait another two weeks to get another one!

Thanks,
Graeme
