I just bought a 20 gb ipod (mac+pc) I hooked it up via usb 2.0 after downloading all the software and itunes, then it asked me to format it. I tried and it freezes my mouse up and everything else and its not doing the format of course. My pc meets all the requirements for the ipod. After trying different things, I am now at the point where after just a few seconds after connecting the ipod to the pc, the freeze begins. I can only reset the pc to get out of it. Apple couldnt help me over the phone and sent me to you all. Id appreciate any help, thx.

Welcome. Download & install the updater and try restoring the iPod or click the update (whichever is available) instead of formatting using the disk.

Don't listen to gstspyder. I have USB2.0 on my computer and I've not had any significant problems with my iPod.

"significant problems" huh?
I bought a $10 firewire card to go with the PC, and it was several months before there was a problem with the card. And the problem was that I was a little to zealous plugging in the firewire and I unseated the PCI card. I shoved it back in and no problems since then...
I would suggest that you go with a firewire card, but if you can't. Try to find the list floating around iPod lounge of USB2.0 cards that have worked without a hitch...
