transfer music from PC to iTunes

Somehow iTunes lost the location of most of my songs (5600) and had the ! by each of them. I have the songs in 19 folders in My Music on my PC. When I try to drag and drop them into the Library, nothing happens. I would just like to get them back into iTunes.

In iTunes:

Click on "File"

Click on "Import"

Choose the files (songs) you want to bring into iTunes.

Thanks. When I do that, each file (which contains over 250 songs) shows empty. When I look at the files via explorer, they are all there.

When I hover the pointer of each file following File>Import, each shows > 1GB , but when selected, it appears empty.
