Assistance please
Brand new 60gb photo.
My mate came round yesterday with his 20gb ordinary.
I had a listen to his ipod and the volume on his was far louder than mine.
Now, I appreciate that there could be many reasons for this, but any clues anybody? My ipod has my complete CD collection on it and his has many "downloaded" tunes on his, but we both had an identicle album on our pods, so I thought I was doing like for like, but perhaps not.
Many thanks,
Dave

What does volume cap mean?
I have learnt today that the UK shipped models have different software in them that makes them at a lower max volume than the US models, something to do with the legislation not allowing loud volumes in the UK?
This would be right as my mates ipod as mentioned above is a US supplied model.
Anybody else heard this?

you answered yourself practically, but you can always adjust to the volumen of the songs on "Preferences > Audio > Sound Enhancer" adjust to high. (This may take some time so choose songs wisely)

Forgive the stupid Q, but why would this take time?

I have tried this eupod software today and it immediately cures the problem giving a very decent volume on all tracks. The problem now is that when the ipod syncs with itues, itunes then sends the ipod a new version again (this is happenning as we speak and I assume that it is putting all the tracks back as they were).
Does anybody know how to get this issue resolved. I guess somehow I have to get iyunes to the same increase on volume on each track, so it does not reload each time.
Hope this makes sense, so any ideas anybody please?
Regards,
Dave

Forget EUPod it's just bad Software! THAT SIMPLE!!
->nashdm2 Thanks for verifing that for me! I was hopeing that after Six Months that, the Author would have had a fix for that little snag. I take it, that He does not...
If you are looking for a way to remove the 'EU Volume Cap' I'd suggest you try, a Program called GoPod. If you google for it, you might be Lucky!! enough to find it!!!
Just run that over your iPod ONCE! And the 'EU Volume Cap' will be gone. No not forever but, it will be gone untill you update or restore (i.e. Reformat), the iPodOS again. At which point you'd just rerun this Program to remove the 'EU Volume Cap' again...
It's just as simple as that!!!

Ichijoe,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Since I wrote the update on this post, I searched the database for eupod and found all about gopod from previous entries you have made. So, I have allowed the itunes to upload all the songs in the ipod (8700!!!).
Now they will be reset back to normal gain. I have downloaded the gopod software and will run that instead.
Thanks,
Dave

Ok let me break it down like this in Pros and Cons for anyone who still doesn't get it...
EUPod's up first!
Pros.... Sorry I can't think of any I'd like to say that it's easy to use and all that, but I'd be lying
Cons.... (To many to list!)
First off; Only works with Mp3's DUH it uses Mp3 Gain to do it's thing. So if your inclined to use anything that's not Mp3 Apple Lossless or AAC. You're not going to get very far with this App
Secondly; Mp3 Gain. Oh Mp3 Gain.... I can't think of a better way to distroy an otherwise fragil Mp3. But then I guess some People like to have the Music 'Clip' and 'Distort'. So who am I to Judge.
Lastly and the BIGGEST REASION OF ALL NOT TO USE THIS SOFTWARE!; Nothing chews though your iTunes.db File better then EUPod. Again some People might like having to rebuild there iPod's every time they want to add a new Song or CD. Again Who am I to Judge. That's what make the World go 'round apparently.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok now GoPod is up!
Pros!
Simple, like a Fire and Forget Smartbomb over some wackjobs Bunker. It just works! Connect the iPod up to your Mac or PC (*nix, Mac or Windows), start the App and in One Click be rid of that anoying Volume Cap virtualy for FOREVER!! Works on not only Mp3's but on Apple Lossless and AAC too!
For the Liberal Yanks who'd simpaistse with the more softer and gentler Idiots in the EU you could allways use GoPod to turn the Cap on.
Cons!
You have to run this Program after every iPodOS (i.e. Firmware), Update or Restore, Seeing how this is a Software Hack on the Volume Cap. Which is itself part of the iPodOS. The trigger beeing the Two Letter Region Code that's assignd to your iPod (i.e. LL-US of FD-France & Germany). So perhaps one day someone can hack the Volume Cap out of the iPodOS totaly thuss ending a need for GoPod.
It will not level your Mp3 or AAC or Lossless File as that is not in the scope of the Program to do so. It will however give you a solid 30% boost in the overall Max (true Max), Volume. Without 'Cliping' or causeing any other distortions to your Music.
The other 'Con' you might hear about is that this Program will Void your Warrantee. That's BS GoPod does not alter one thing on the iPod itself just the iPodOS. It's no different then say adding Pictues to an iPod Photo. You do a Restore and it's back to normal. or whatever was noraml for that iPod in particular.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lastly and this is more for the Yanks then anyone else. GoPod was only built to remove the EU Volume Cap. iPods not originating from the EU will not work with GoPod. Trying to use GoPod on a non EU iPod could cause your iPod to malfunction. You can't upcap a player that was never caped to begin with.
And yes there were plenty of People who tryed this on there LL iPods. Which is why I bring it up. I belive you can Cap it (Lord knows why!?!),. But seeing that it was never caped to begin with. No one outside of the EU should ever need this Program...

Actually if you read about mp3gain you'll see it's proper function is NOT to induce clipping but to *reduce* clipping brought about by encoding to MP3 format. Please don't post uneducated 'opinions' without knowing firstly what you're talking about.
It can be made to boost volume to post clipping levels if you wish but it's not the intended function.

Yes given that People use it 'properly' most People like me would just use Auto and in some cases it could make it (Mp3's), worse.
In anycase wether or not Mp3Gain, or EUPods, implematation of it. Is any good or not? It still leaves People like me who would use Apples' AAC Format in the lurch. As for Mp3Gain itself it maybe a decent Program I never really botherd to try it as ca. 60% of the stuff on my iPod is in AAC.

MP3gain will not screw anything up provided people read the manual. Which they usually don't. Then they complain something is wrong...

I was only referenceing Mp3Gain as used by EUPod! I have never actually used a stright version Mp3Gain on my iPod (having no reasion to),. As I have already stated over 60% of my stuff is an AAC-192kb/s. A format that Mp3Gain will never touch. As for Mp3Gain eating up my iTunes.db File again I never had the luxuary to find out. SEE ABOVE!
What I do know and what I will comment on is what EUPod does. And it eats up the iTunes.db File and once you loose that. it's over! It's Game over. you can iPod:\Format /q /s (or use the Apple Update and Restore software),. To do it for you...
Why anyone would insist on doing this time and time agian is beyond me!

Why don't you take a look over HERE!! (http://www.themacobserver.com/article/2002/10/01.4.shtml)
It will expain what the EU Cap is and how it works. Granted it's dated as it referrs to G1 ~ G3 iPods. But, the info is still very much vaild for those who purchased there iPods in the EU...

I know of the patch to remove the volume cap, I wasn't arguing that, I was arguing the merits of MP3gain. :)
MP3
Read that again. MP3! :D

Ok If you have read what I said. I stated I do NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT Mp3Gain in and of itself ONLY! So perhaps I might have misspoke about Mp3Gain in and of itself as I have never used it by itself always with EUPod. So perhaps I'm shifting a lot of Crap from EUPod unduly onto Mp3Gain. Besides I perfer AAC over Mp3...

Hi,
I love my iPhone but have come to regret buying it before being released in Australia - I did it on a spur of the moment and only realised the next day that the phone I'd ordered would have no warrenty, and no upgrades! duh!
Anyhow, hopefully when they're brought out in Oz next year I'll be able to upgrade without 'bricking' it.
For now - is there any way I can increase the volume? can I run the software you're talking about? could I change the volume level in my mac - would that do it? I have seen some software to 'normalise' the different volume levels, maybe it can also raise it?
Thanks. Hoopbah
