View Full Version : iSkin creating scuffs and small scratches?

When I put my iSkin on last week, my iPod didn't have a single scratch on it. When I pulled it out of the iSkin yesterday to change to my new pearl one, it was covered in little scuffs and scratches. What happened here? Is this some sort of residue or what? It won't rub off with just a soft cloth either... :(

First of all, the iPod has an unnatural affinity for picking up small scratches. I noticed this when I saw that the Apple slip case was leaving lots of little scratches--I mean geez, the thing's covered in soft nylon. By the time I got my iSkin, my iPod had a network of fine scratches, but it doesn't look like my iSkin is contributing. However since you had a virgin iPod, you'd be in a better position to tell.
Did you wash your iSkin before you put it on? If any small particles get trapped between the iSkin and the iPod, a small amount of movement could leave fine scratches.
I have noticed some smudges when I remove my iSkin for its weekly washing. They may be due to excess mold release compound or outgassing of the silicone as it ages. The smudges can be removed with a damp soft cloth with a little bit of detergent.
The bottom line is that if you're going to be using your iPod, it's not going to be pristine. There seems to be a high incidence of OCD on the forum :-), we all like the iPod as sculpture--but scratches are inevitable.

hey kari, how's it going?
my iskin does almost the same thing. sometimes the ventilation holes on the back pick up lint and other nasties from my pocket. i read about this 'affinity' for scratches in many different places, so i made the commitment to scrub clean the ipod on a weekly basis. i also never put the thing in my pocket or shirt pocket without first putting it into the maclear as well. it gives it a nice slickness so it doesn't get stuck, while at the same time keeping dirt out.
i'd suggest rubbing some carnauba wax on it, same as you should use on your car. it'll put a really thin protection coat all over it. on my first pod i put it on both the metal and the plastic, but on this one i just did it on the metal, as i have an ishade covering the screen.

When i got my new iPod, I vowed to let go of my scratch phobia. Its gonna happen, the iPod scratches if you look at wrong, so what r u gonna do? I love these people who just wrap theirs up in saran wrap and all that just to keep it pristine. The iSkin will allow some dirt and such in, but whatever, there is no case that wont. The iSkin is great if you want adequate protection without worrying about greasy fingerprints. I promise you that when you stop worrying bout scratches, you will enjoy the iPod a great deal more!!!

Yeah I'm majorly OCD when it comes to my stuff...I'm obsessively careful. As a child I wouldn't let certain people play with my toys because I knew they'd come back broken.
I didn't wash it before I put it on, but I checked it out real good for mold release and didn't come out with a residue on my hands (another one of my OCD things...I can't stand greasy fingers. that's why I hate Armor-All.) You can't see it anyway with the iSkin on it, but I was just wondering if I was the only person...it totally baffled me that something that soft and rubbery would scratch it at all.
Lucite should be stronger than this...I have a hand-carved Lucite keychain that I bought 6 years ago...it's been attached to my backpack and slam banged around through high school, ecology club hikes, college, bus trips, etc...and it's not THAT scratched up.
(and hi Sean...I'm lovely, how about yourself? ;) )

Scuffs it will leave but I doubt it will scratch your ipod. The scuffs are easily wiped off so no big deal.
One of the manufacturers here told me that the type of plastic iPod is made from will scratch very easily. Just do your best to protect it and then try to forget about it and enjoy what it give back to you.
Having said that I should tell you that scratches, scuffs and stains drive me CRAZY!!!!!!!! This has been a major problem all through my life, I am trying hard to tone it down but I can tell you every new mark on my employees and my computers, electronic equipment, sofa, desk floor???????.
