I am in the market for good earbuds. I went to Radio Shack to buy a connector and noticed they had in-ear earphones form a company called Nexxtech, wich is supposedly Panasonic, according to the salesman.

There was a special on the earbuds (half-priced) so I paid them 20$CDN wich is a joke.

I plugged 'em in and to my surprise they sounded good (after some struggling to adjust them properly and trying different earbud cover sizes). Not greaaaaaaaaat.... but definetely worth the money.

So I used the earbuds for a day and noticed two problems.

1- I hear the hard drive spinning in the right channel with these earphones.

2- When the iPod is shut down and on HOLD, it's as if the eadphones were keeping the iPod from going to sleep. The screen is off, but you can hear a hiss in the headphones.

ANyone experinced such problems with headphones?

I have also purchased the Nexxtech directional earbuds from Radioshack. I also got them at half price, paying only $20 Canadian. They are a bargain at this price.

They sound slightly better than the Sony MDR-EX51LP or EX71LP, having similar highs and bass but having a louder and better defined mid range.

I have been disappointed with the Shure E2c, they are over-hyped. The E2c have a decent clean mid and better sound isolation, but they greatly lack bass and also lack high frequency response. The E2c's are not any better than the Sony or Nexxtech earphones.

The Nexxtech biggest fault is its over-emphasised high frequency. However, if you can use the foam inserts from the E2c to improve the sound. With the foam inserts the highs are not as over-blown and the overall sound is tighter. My advice to anyone wanting inexpensive canal earphones, is to purchase the Nexxtech earbuds and then purchase a set of E2c foam insets -- foam inserts cost about $12 for a set of 5.

I have not experienced any hard-drive noise with any of the earphones using my Gen 2 MiniIpod. However the Nexxtech earbuds are very efficient (loud) and have exaggerated highs, so its normal for any flaws with your Ipod to become more noticable with the Nexxtech earphones.

I have had one serious problem with the Nexxtech earphones that has just occured. There is a loose connection with one of the sides -- so the sound is intermittently not working. I will get a replacement from Radioshack tomorrow. But I'm begging to question the durability of the Nexxtech earphones.

Hearing your harddrive through your earphones isn't because of the exaggerated highs, it's a defected iPod issue (from what i've heard). Check here. (http://forums.ipodlounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45917&highlight=Harddrive+through+earphones)

I agree that its a defect with the Ipod and not the earphones. I never said the exaggerated highs were causing the problem -- the faulty Ipod is the cause of the problem. But if you use headphones with over-exaggerated highs then the hard drive noise will become more apparent and perhaps more anoying -- its just common sense.

Sorry, must have misread. Jet_Pilot, you should take your iPod back to an Apple store to get an exchange for a non-faulty iPod.
