Well, my photo 40 up and died yesterday. I took it for a walk (and took my dog along with) in the morning, and thought I shut it off. I came home in the evening and tried to start it up, and it refused to do anything - the screen was totally dark and blank. Not even a reset did anything. I popped it in the charger and after a minute, the screen booted up and everything looked peachy.

I left it in the cradle overnight to give it a full charge, but when I went to take it for a walk again, it shut down immediately after I pulled it out of the cradle. I put it back in, it booted up again, and looked like it was charging but the battery meter was still 0%.

The iPod's still at home, so I can't do a restore on it right now, but I'm wondering whether this has happened to others.

Will a restore fixed the problem?

Should I just return it, even if a restore fixes the problem?

Can I take it back to an Apple store, rather than returning it to Amazon?

What are the chances they'd give me a 60 gig instead? :)

My recommendation? take it the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store and have them take a look at it. They fixed mine up after a corrupted updater did pretty much the same thing as yours. The restore would not even work.

it took them about 3 minutes to get me up and running. If nothing else they will let you know if it is terminal

Thanks, I'll try that. I did a restore last night and it had no effect whatsoever. It almost seems like the battery has become disconnected somehow -- it powers up only when plugged-in, and completely shuts down when unplugged. It's a total mystery why this happened, since I didn't even drop it. AGH!
