Today is the UIL Academic contest at McLennan Community College in Waco, TX. While walking around campus here I discovered a lot of people looking at my white headphones, and several guys have asked me what kind of music I have on my ipod.

personally, id rather girls asking me about my music, and anyway, i dont use my ipod headphones . they're a bit rubbish, so nobody really knows i use an ipod. it shouldnt matter. there are many other people with many other players , and to me the ipod is just another face in the crowd

I did not have any girls come ask me about my music, I did have a couple of girls tell me they were going to stand on the corner (we were on a corner, I was waiting for the pizza man, and no telling what they were waiting for) and be hookers.. HAHA!
I just like to be a show off, and us Ipod users have to show off our quality players.

If you think you need money to 'attract' female species then you just carry on listening to your angst music on your iPod at home.
And ruach10, i hate people like you, showing off a iPod, just wait when you get a knief stuck in your guts. I'll be e-laughing at you.

i'm actually cooler than my ipod. so when i have my ipod, people are like, man, your ipod looks cooler than all the other ipods i've seen because you make it so much cooler.
sometimes it's hard being as cool as me.

one cannot judge themselves cool...it can only be done by those around you.
ipods don't make you cool...maybe they give u a lil confidence and make you feel cool, but they don't make you cool.

For some reason, that's quite pathetic. "Get popular with your iPod!", whatever. Maybe it's because popularity is nothing I long for in my school - AT ALL.

yes, i also find it quite amusing that little white and silver mp3 player can change your social status. dang, this should totally be apple's new marketing strategy:
"buy an ipod or be a loser and be looked down upon by all your peers who apparently regard material worth in the highest esteem!"
i just have a very well made mp3 player. no one exalts me for my camry, you know.

i saw an article somewhere saying how many people where mugged for their ipods on NYC subways, it was in the 100s... i dont know how many of you are familiar with the area, but it seems like every other person in NYC has the very noticeable apple headphones in their ears, undoubtebly connected to their pod... just watch out

I agree, definitely wearing the white earphones is not a good idea: they're cheap, they shout you have something very expensive and easily stealable (is that a word?) and definitely it's anything but original to have an iPod these days...
Paradoxically (how the hell do you spell that?), iPod has become a mass object, unlike anything Apple had ever done before.

I personally don't really care if a guy has a lot of money or not. I just don't want him to be a loser I would have to support. I guess some girls are all about money though...why would you want them anyway?

the ipod is pop culture. if i go around with any headphones on, people ask me about my ipod. i dont have one. not yet atleast, im getting one in a few days but ive been using this old one my parents gave me...it really sucked so im gettin an ipod but still...pop culture...nothing we can do about it. your not going to be popular if you have an ipod, because most people that use an mp3 player have an ipod. ur not cool just cuz u have an ipod, just face it.

When I got my iPod it just trademarked me as a geek. This was in March of 04, when the device was just becoming popular. I think it didn't really go mainstream until the 4G.

I go to University of Virginia and about half the people walking around here have the white earbuds on. It's ridiculous. It's more like... be preppy with your iPod here. Oh man... too many prepsters.

Interesting, I did not think this would cause such a stir. I guess the popularity of the Ipod itself is what interests me. Amazing how people can instantly know what those white earbuds are attached to. It is said that the Apple Logo is one of the most well known logos and very easy to indentify. I guess Apple just has a way to market in a way that changes to way we do everything.
As for now using the stock earbuds, personally I love the pair I have. Since like with every pair of earbuds I have owned, I suspect they will go out on me one of these days. When they do, I will get another pair of the stock earbuds.
they hold those things at community colleges now? man, things sure have gone downhill since the days that i used to rock those competitions.
The larger schools have their competitions at Baylor, thats a large university here, you might have heard of it. I go to a small school, and the community college hosts the event for the small schools.

I only know of a handful of people at my school with Ipods. I knew many more with various other MP3 players. Though its not the biggest deal, I just find if funny that I am usually on the other side of the popular trends, and with the Ipod I seem to now have somthing that is currently a fad. The thing about the Ipod is that it is not just a fad, the ipod is quality, and is the best and most popular because it was designed and marketed by the best.

iPods make you popular? Eh. I don't really think so.. It's kinda sad if you makes it you more cooler/popular. :S . I surely would not like to be defined as my iPod coolness, I'd rather be just me coolness. (Sounded pretty lame sorry :() It has been getting me more attention though, people have come up and asked me if they could see it/listen to it etc. It's just a music player. I do feel more confident about listening to my music in public though.. I don't have a huge fugly CD player jutting out of my pocket. :D

I understand with the "show off" part of yur comment.. and it would be nice if ppl would ask me what music I'm playing. but... "us ipod users have to show off our quality players"??? That's a matter of opinion and ego I would think. Plus, I wouldn't want to bring mine around too much just b/c I wouldn't want to make some ppl feel bad that they can't afford one.
My school yr hasen't started yet, but hopefuly when it does I'll bring my Ipod around and ppl will start up conversations asking me what I'm listening to... just b/c whenever I'm the first one to initiate conversation, nothing works out.

i never cared for the earbud earphones. I use a different set of headphone, b/c the IPod ones I dislike that I can't feel them in my ears. They could fall so easaly.

As a chick I have to comment here. If you are going to try to attract the gals from your possessions then expect to be a very over-worked sucker.
Take a bit of advice from The Offspring - Why Don't You Get A Job - Gotta agree with those lyrics.

But if you want a girl that is only interested in what you own and you are happy with that .. then expect to work your arse off.

I'm sorry to tell you, but previous generations were the same way. They just weren't able to show it because they didn't have the same amount of crap to purchase that we do. Ever heard the phrase "keeping up with the Jonses." That's not a new expression.

But supporting 'Boro is a far more popular choice than supporting the second most hated team (first before this season) in the Premiership.
The iPod is a social tool used to woo the people you socialise with. This tool becomes a piece of plastic and metal when you own crap songs though. Get smart, get good music.

I'm not popular for any reason. It's all a fad, which is what I hate about it. I got a 3rd gen and people were saying "eww..." and calling me a loser. The next Christmas, BAM, those same kids were running around with iPod minis loaded with horribble music (and when I say that, I'm talking Hoobastank. That's how bad it is.
I listen to Mudhoney, and people act like I'm some freak, I'd hate to see what they'd do at Ozzfest...

Seriously, it’s not a good idea to advertise that you’re carrying a $ 300 piece of electronics on you that’s almost untraceable. I have a friend who was beat up and robbed for his iPod, after that happened I started keeping my iPod in my pants pocket and running the headphone cord up under my shirt, that way people can know you might have an iPod, but they will have no idea where it is on you, and thus you will be less likely to get it jacked. Plus, it’s an iPod, 70% of everyone who owns an MP3 player has an iPod, it’s not like having one is a status symbol anymore, so there’s really no need to show it off, unless you want to attract the wrong kind of attention.

funny...how do you show off your ipod when EVERYONE ELSE HAS ONE TOO???!!!!
Umm...you bought your ipod because it's simple to use, and stores a good amount of music. If you bought it for any other reason, then you don't deserve to have one.
Stop being so materialistic...ppl...its an ipod...my golden 1st gen mini is outdated and i'm rather proud that i own something a lot of ppl don't, not fretting that every other kid has a nano, or a 6gig.

Exactly, everyone has an iPod on a typical college campus due to rich mommy and daddy, people who have jobs, and the freeiPod thing due to having and entire campus of potential referrals. I do everything not to fall in with the trend, I simply bought the Ipod because it was cheap at the price I got it and small. Worth the extra $20 over the Brick Zen with the ever looming headphone jack problem and at the time, Dell DJs were still expensive.
My iPod stays in my pocket in an aluminum case. I have a pair of Sony black MDR headphones. Only identifiable piece is the IPod remote clipped to the edge of my pocket, which allows me to control volume and also acts as an extension cord since the stupid cord on the Sony headphones was too short.
Most people have the minis, few have the 20gbs. Really haven't seen many of the larger ones or colors, but its not exactly something you'd just notice.

Sooorrrryy I'm a nirvana fanatic.
and in the 3 weeks since I placed my order on a black 4GB nano I've had half my high-school come up to me and ask what is my shipping status and all that. then we get to talking about music, and that's the way i've made TONS of new friends in the past few weeks. If this is what it was like when I had one on the way, can't wait till Monday when I can actually have it and bring it to school. in the end the music is what matters, not the player, and I've made tons of Nirvana-and-MCR-loving freak friends just like myself. so i'm happy.

I always have my 'Pod on me, if im not using it my best friend does. The only time it stood out was at the beggining of term when I changed tracks and people wanted to know what it was. I wouldnt say that it made me more popular though...
