Somewhere and I thought it was here I saw a headphone amp that snaps on and boosts volume and cuts down on battery usage. I did a search here and can't find any such beast. Does one exist or did I dream it?

Yep it's the second one. Although I didn't think the price was that high. Oh well, thanks that should do the trick.
