View Full Version : How to recover Playlists?
Apologies if this has been answered before - I wasn't able to find an answer.
I had to restore windows from scratch and reformat my HD. I used CopyPod to restore all my music to iTunes, but I can't figure out how to restore the playlists.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks, Jack

Welcome. Click on 'Copying music back to computer from iPod' (#1) in my sig and the article will explain how to do it with PodUtil. It rebuilds playlists.
I tried it using PodUtil
While Copypod copied all the songs flawlessly, PodUtil had lots of errors. However, the files did get copied into the error folder.
PodUtil indicated that I should turn off the "keep iTunes organized" and "copy files to iTunes folder options" before copying.
But when I fired up iTunes, the playlists were there but they were empty. I selected "add folder to iTunes", and all the songs were imported, but the playlists are still blank.
Do I have to leave the iTunes options mentioned above turned on before copying?

You need to check that info in the article and the support site and see what it says about it.

Already did, didn't find anything that helped.
I just noticed that I was supposed to leave the "keep iTunes organized" option checked. duh
I'm running it again and will report back.
Well, it added the playlists, but is seems that, unless the songs get copied without being considered in error, they don't make it into the playlist.
So out of 6,500 songs, only 37 made it , the rest did get copied, but were thrown into the error folder. I can manually add them to iTunes, but they won't show up in their respecitive folders.
I'm going to ask for a refund.
The folks at PodUtil couldn't resolve the problem, but did refund my license fee.
I went back and read the tutorial (duh) in CopyPod and found that I should have restored to iTunes rather than to a folder, and after copying all the songs, I had to import the two XML files that the copy process stores on the desktop. I'm now back up & running with 100% of my playlists restored.
