BMW adapter ?

Does anyone know what the iPod display does when installed witht BMW adapter? Can you still use the iPod controls? I ask because I have heard several people state that they bought the adapter from BMW and installed it in locations other than the glovebox. I would like to do the same if I can see the track info on the iPod, otherwise I may go with Icelink or ICruze.
