Hello,

I am a new owner of a 6 month old Ipod (3G, 40gb) that I purchased from a good friend, who "upgraded" to the 60gb unit.

I am a huge fan on Mac's and am only working on a PC, because my Ibook was stolen 2 months ago, and my fiance has a (older) VAIO laptop.

The computer is running Windows 2000, with SP4 and I installed the latest Ipod Updater software. I have iTunes 4.7

This is my first Ipod and was thrilled to finally get one.

However, I am having major problems - and have no idea what's going on, or how to solve the problem.

I restore the Ipod to original factory settings and updated the Ipods software. Then, upon reconnecting to the PC, as expected, iTunes started.

No songs transferred and I got (several) Windows error messages, informing me something about "Ipod_control..." being corrupt or unreadable run chkdsk, then additional (individual)error messages informing me that files (F01, F02, ....etc) were corrupt or unreadable. These are the song files, and they don't appear to be corrupt, and work fine.

Then after many annoying error messages and repeatedly hitting "OK", some songs started to download. I got about 14 (from 966) of the songs downloaded, then the computer seemed to freeze. The Ipod screen was still showing "do not disconnect"... I had to.

Upon disconnecting, I noticed that the 14 songs had downloaded and worked on the Ipod. I reconnected, and went through the same problems - this time getting another 9 songs downloaded (in about 45 minutes) after numerous "Ipod_control..." corrupt error messages.

Then nothing... no more downloads and just freezing up the computer after more messages.

The computer hardware profile recognizes that the Ipod is installed and claims that it's working properly... but obviously, somethings wrong.

The chkdsk that it keeps refering to cannot be run and by the time I get to the screen to allow it to be run - the Ipod is no longer recognized as being connected (even if it is). Additionally, if I go to "My Computer" and click F Drive (Removable device), then click the Ipod_control folder icon - it states file path not accessible.

Is it that the computer is too old (6 years old) or is there somethign wrong with this Ipod. It was working very well, the day I bought it, and my friend (who had a Mac) gave me a full demo of how it works... downloads and all.

Can this be fixed, or should I just wait for my Insurance money to get the new iMac or mac mini.

Please advise... anybody. I waited for ages to get my iPod, and now don't seem to be able to use it.

thanks
