I receive "Error 1606, could not access network location bin" when trying to install the mandatory upgrade to iTunes 4.7.1. Apple was no help whatsoever, instead referring me to a correction for error 1607 (http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93411 ). I went through the motions, but this did not help.
The 1606 error has been posted on this website from time to time, but I have not seen a solution that can help me. However, the consensus seems to be that this is an error caused by the installshield. The installshield website has a page dedicated to this error (http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110724).
Following that resource's advice, I double checked the entries in regedit to no avail. The final piece of advice falls apart for me on step 4:
1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box opens.
2. In the Open field, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. In the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\
4. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click Common Administrative Tools.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\
[My machine has no such value! My "Common Administrative tools" are in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders. Changing the value at this location does not work either. ]
5. In the Value data box of the Edit String dialog box that appears, type the following line, and then click OK:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
6. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
7. Restart the computer.
I also tried the usual uninstall, reinstall of iTunes several times, rebooted, etc. Additionally, there was a thread online somewhere claiming that the 1606 error was caused by Norton AntiVirus and/or SystemWorks. I uninstalled those programs and got marginally farther, only to receive a different error message: "Out of disk space -- Volume: 'bin'; required space: 320 KB; available space 0 KB. Free some disk space and retry." However, it then lists my drives as having more than enough disk space (which they do). For example, "D: Available: 2 GB; required: 576 KB." I have a 120 GB hard drive, so space is not an issue.
Any ideas? This is driving me crazy.
