I got the ipod from a friend. I bought a usb cable to hook it up/charge it but it doesnt come on ,my computer doesnt reconise it either:(

The 3G iPod, which you have, can't charge via USB. I assume the battery is dead and that's why the computer won't recognize the iPod.
