I don't know if I can wait for Griffin to re-design the iTrip to fit the top of the new iPods. Griffin say maybe June, but by the time they re-design, tool up, manufacture and distribute it could be Christmas (heck, they have excess demand problems with the current iTrip). So I am considering buying the current iTrip and just cutting off the plastic peg that holds it in place on the previous iPod.

Anyone tried this? Any thoughts?

cool plan - i'd like to know how it turns out. but...... doesnt the iTrip get its power from the ring around the headphone jack on the previous model ipods?

If it does, then plugging it in won't make it work as it won't get any power. And would it be able to get proper sound if the jack doesnt fit all the way inside, thanks to the power connection not having anywhere to fit - meaning that itll sit a few mm's out of place with the power connector resting on the outside of the ipod?

I think I saw somewhere - maybe ipodding.com - that they'd taken one to pieces and got it working by supplying it power from an external battery, but it didn't look too pretty!

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get one of these working - especially for my car as it would mean i wouldn't have to have a decent stereo in it (where little blighters can steal it), but I cant see any way of doing it at the moment. :(

Yup. Ipoding.com successfully did it by taking it apart and using an external battery.

Thanks Davebach and Wolfman. I didn't realise that the previous iPod provided power from the edge of the headphone socket wherease the new one doesn't.

I thought that I could fit the iTrip to the new iPod simply by cutting off the plastic peg, but I don't fancy wiring up a battery as well.

I'll wait. Thanks iPodders.

I notice you're in the UK bensonf. Did you know that it is illegal for Griffin to supply the iTrip in the UK and also illegal to use it as well? You may have to look for an alternative solution.
