the softwear required for communitcating with the ipod is not installed correctly. please reinstall itunes to install the ipod's software.
ive reinstalled with the ipods cd and from apple.com a couple times and it keeps giving me the same messege. any ideas?

Have you reinstalled iTunes? Have you tried to reset the iPod? Have you done a restore on the iPod? Have you tried a different USB/FireWire port?

I believe that your ipod db is currupt or some other software has made it unreadable to iTunes.
If you can explore your ipod (windows), see if there is an item with a .old extention.
You can try to delete the newly created file and rename the .old back to a usable file.
Or the easiest way is to reformat the pod and start over.

brand new ipod.. there isnt anything on it yet

You CD may not have the updated version of the pod software. Go and download it from apple and see if that works.
Then make sure that your itunes is up to date.
It think the latest is 4.7.1.
iPod update should be dated: 2005-02-22
