This was years ago, but mp3.com used to be a definitive place to find a lot of lesser known bands in the rock/metal/industrial genre with definite talent, and worth listening to.
That incarnation of mp3.com is long since dead, but is there a site that has a good amount of demo MP3s for download, as well as the ability to download various bands' stuff in MP3 format?
I've seen a number of sites, but either they are just shills for the Big 5 labels, have relatively few bands, or they only allow downloading in some DRM-encumbered format.
Thanks in advance.

There is a long thread about this. (Search the forum for something like "free music sources.") But here are a few:
>> http://www.tonspion.de/ << auf Deutsch, but how hard is it to click a download link?
Motherlode of free mp3 links:
mp3blogs:
Net labels ("albums" released free over the net):
Also, an increasing number of labels and bands offer songs to download from their sites -- especially in genres like indie, goth, techno, surf, and other fringy categories.
Finally a personal favorite:

Enjoy!

Thank you very much for the info. I tried other searches (not here), and came up with sites that were either quite lacking in content, or were just shills to install spyware on your system [1].
I've also heard that www.soundclick.com is good, when researching Creative Commons licensing for a CD a band I'm helping is putting out.
[1]: Yes, I know, I know... I should just see if the local student bookstore offers a package deal of an iPod and a Mac Mini... then I'd be pretty much assured of a spyware-free computer. However, I can't give up Neverwinter Nights, World of Warcraft, and C&C: Generals.
Oh wait... all three have Mac versions...
