I know it wasn't possible in the original, but is it possible in this one? Or at least mark them for deletion?

erm im not sure if i understand this quesyoon.

You cant delete songs using the ipod but if you delete the song on itunes it will delete the song on your ipod.

If you select the option on itunes to only update checked songs then only those will be on your ipod

Essentially what I mean is:

My ipod will probably be my only method of listening to music, but when I get an album there are inevitably songs I don't like. Is there any way I can delete them using my ipod, or at least set it up so the song is deleted on sync (that way I don't have to remember the name of the songs I don't like)

No, this isn't possible, you can only delete from within iTunes. The first and second gen minis run the same software (albeit now updated for both) so this feature is present in neither.

yes you can delete songs on the next sync by making the playlist criteria on your ipod to only upload rated songs (1-5 stars). Once you set up this criteria, all you have to do is to increase of decrease the number of stars to match the criteria of the songs that'll go in the ipod.

i diddnt know about the criteria thing

but i know what you mean now what i used to do is give the song a zero star rating (given that yoouve rated your other songs) next time when sync you can reorder your library by rating, go to the ones with no stars and DELETE.

Sure does, just hit the menu button twice while in the "Now Playing" screen, and then scroll to change the rating. Hitting the menu button once will allow you to scrub through a song BTW. Enjoy your new iPod!

It just occurred to me, if you are playing yur iPod, find a rubbish song you want to get rid of, why not just add it to an on-the-go playlist (press and hold whilst the song title, artist name or whatever is highlighted) and when you get back to your computer, you now have a list of the songs you want to get rid of.

^^ in essence a good idea. But since you have to highlight the song in the menu to add it to the on the go you would have to look for what song was playing and then navigate to the song on the iPod to add it to the on-the-go. The star rating with a smartplaylist to either exclude them from the mini or to have an easy updating playlist to see what songs you want to delete from iTunes is the simplier method.

You can set up smart playlist with live updating and use 'ratings':
One star = then rename to 'delete'
two stars = rename 'maintenance'
3 to 5 stars for rating songs from least to most favorite.

If you add a symbol at the front (ex: -delete) this will put it at the top of your playlist.

Set up the smart list stats with stars and leave live updating checked plus remove the songs number "25" & leave it blank. You will be able to rate on the fly and put all songs you want deleted automatically in the delete list. Then when you connect it to the PC you will need to go into the main library of the iPod (only if you use the iPod on manual not auto) and delete the songs. This will also delete them from the delete playlist.

If you auto sync the iPod then you need to go into the main iTunes library and either delete the song from your PC.

Uncheck the song if you only want to remove it from the iPod but leave it in iTunes.
