do i need an apple computer to download songs into the ipod can i do it on a dell can i do anything with the ipod with a dell computer

Yes, the iPod has been Windows compatible for some time. You can connect the iPod to your computer using either FireWire (if your PC has a FireWire port), or more commonly, USB. All newer model iPods include the USB cable.
For managing the iPod and transferring music to it, there are a number of software packages that can be used. The simplest solution is to download Apple's iTunes for Windows, which you can get from http://www.apple.com/itunes
For all intents and purposes, iTunes works the same on the PC as it does on a Mac.
Note that you will need to be using Windows 2000 or XP to use iTunes. If you are using an older version of Windows (98 or ME), you will need to consider third-party software.
