Please help! I have a new 40g photo ipod and I have been having problems with the computer recognizing all of a sudden. I have only had this iPod for 3 days, well anyways heres whats up.... the first 300 songs I had copied onto my computer transfered over to the iPod just fine but when I plugged my ipod in the next day to do an update of the new songs I have ripped it seemed to be working fine but when I went to play the iPod with the new songs nothing was on the iPod. Not even the original songs. So what I decided to do next was use the ipod updater and do a restore to clear the iPod and then start from scratch and resync to iTunes. When I was finished my iPod showed there wasn't any songs on it still so I did a reset. After the reset I was able to see the songs but this time my album jackets were all screwed up. So I was reading on this forum about some other people who had the same problems and they said what they did to fix it was delete iTunes, and delete iPod programs from the program files buy using windows add/delete program and then restart the computer and go to apples website and download the newest versions of iTunes and iPod update software, which I have done but now iTunes won't recognize my iPod and when I go to use the iPod updater I get a message that says "cant lock iPod. Please check if any other applications are using iPod and try again" I have tried everything I can think of! I have gone into the windows task manager and I can't see any program that would be using the iPod, I have tried it with iTunes both opened and closed, I have tried reseting the iPod, rebooting the computer, Re-deleting and downloading the iPod updater program, I have done everything! PLEASE HELP ME

Hi

I had this problem after my machine crashed mid-song transfer. Some sort of lock file was left on the ipod (I assume that it would normally de deleted after a successful transfer). I simply browsed to the Ipod in windows explorer and deleted the lock file (sorry, I forget the filename) which appeared on the ipod root Once I had done this the updater worked perfectly.

Hope this helps

That's what I'm getting. Only problem is: I can't access my hard drive from windows. It tells me it needs formatted, but won't do it. I'm stuck in the land of eternal !File on my iPod. I think it's b/c it thinks my iPod is just a USB flash device, but I can't quite figure this one out. I can't even restart the iPod w/o it going from the 'Apple' to the '!FileFolder'. Any help out there?

Called HP Support and found out my HDD is hosed, so they're shipping me a new iPod. We discovered this by performing a HDD R/W in diagnostic mode.

To get into diagnostic mode:
Reboot (using select and menu hold-down)
Upon Apple logo, press |<< and Select.
Diagnostic mode should come up. Bunch of stuff here.
Hit >>| until you see 'HDD R/W' and hit select.
Hit select again to run.
Mine came back '-729 GB HD Fail Test End' when it should have said something like '37.something'
There are other tests there, but once he heard that we stopped.

Hope this helps.
