Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. I scanned the forums and couldn't find this specific problem posted so here goes:

My 4G 60GB iPod Photo will not connect to iTunes as an iPod - it only connects as a removable drive. I can browse the drive see that all my songs are there but when navigating the iPod through the touch pad I can't see anything - no songs, play lists, anything related to my songs; when connected iTunes won't sync the music. Using My Computer, I can see the iPod and its treated like a removable drive. All my photos are there (and iTunes syncs them) so I'm not sure what the deal is.

This wasn't always the case.. I installed the iTunes and iPod software just fine and it worked for a few days before this happened. I think I accidentally undocked the iPod without unmounting it and lost its database somehow. This is the second time this happened but to resolve it, I just restarted my PC and then docked the iPod - this time the fix doesn't work.

This is my third iPod. I had the very first 1G iPod with XPlay installed and it worked just fine (still does actually, but I uninstalled XPlay after I installed the iTunes software so now it won't work on a PC). I had a 4G 40GB iPod Photo that I bought last Tuesday and exchanged for the 60GB.

The only thing I've tried is rebooting the PC and redocking. I couldn't get the iPod to reset (and didn't need to before) and I don't want to reformat the drive because I shouldn't have to do this - this is the second time this has happened in 5 days so I will not be transferring 25GB of music every time this happens.

Here are the PC specs if that helps in any way:

2.0Ghz P4
512MB RAM
1x 120GB HD as a single system partition (C:)
1x 200GB HD as single data partition (D:)
1x Plextor DVD ± R/W
1x Plextor CD-RW
SB Audigy 2 Platinum w/ 1394 port used for iPod

Here is what I did:

I uninstalled XPlay 2.0
rebooted PC and redocked

I've seen a lot of posts that talk about mounting problems and my issue could be related but I can use it as a disk and I don't get any errors when connecting the iPod to the PC.

Has anyone seen and resolved this problem where the photos are copied, the iPod can be used as a removable drive (oh... and I DON'T have that use as disk setting checked in iTunes), and the song database on the iPod isn't functional even though I can browse the HD for the songs.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Even though you don't want to do it, you'll probably need to restore your iPod using the iPod updater software.

If you accidently undocked the iPod while your computer was writing to it, the iPod database could very likely have been corrupted. The only way to fix the corruption is to restore your iPod back to factory settings. Although this erases everything on your iPod, as long as you have all your music files on your computer, a re-sync will upload everything again.

Good luck--
