View Full Version : Firmware Update 1.3
It says on the Apple site that it'll be available early May. However it is already reaching mid May already. Any ideas when it'll be available.

your guess is as good as anybody's. I was expecting it to be out already.
Apple's claim might have some credence if the update is out before the 15th (any later and their promise is just a blatant lie). So, they've got 6 more days.
Besides, what does 1.3 have that makes it such a significant update? Will it have AAC support?

Rumours are that it will support AAC. Or is that 2.0? I think it is 1.3.

see? questions, questions. It would seem that they would only give windows users AAC only when the iTunes Store is made available for Windows (knowing how Apple works--being proprietory and all). So if AAC is made avalaible in 1.3, it will be a pleasant surprise...but I'm not counting on it. But on the other hand, if AAC is not made available in 1.3, I don't know what else it could include that will make it a worthwhile update for windows users. So, needless to say, I'm confused. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Yeah I think it has AAC support, but im not certain.
However I am refreshing the Apple page everyday :(
Once they deliver 1.3, they can give us OTG playlists soon afterwards ;)

Wait up. What's this about Apple being proprietary? What do you mean exactly? BTW AAC is not proprietary. It's just not owned by MS. Yoy.

Yes I know that AAC is not proprietary...I was refering to the iTunes Store.

You know, although the music store is for Mac users only, I'm pretty sure the Steve would love to sell music to everyone with a PC. I don't know what deals were made so that Apple could legally sell music but I'll bet that whatever it was had something to do with the fact that the Apple market niche is so small. Oh, and since iTunes 4 allows sharing, I am sure folks in Redmond and elsewhere are watching closely.WMP does not support AAC nor mpeg4. MS has never willingly supported a format that they don't either own outright or control entirely. I don't think they had any choice with mp3 given it immense presence but they would be quite happy if it went away and users had to encode in wma. Tell me I'm wrong.
Apple has said that it will bring the iTunes store to Windows users all along. We just didn't know if it would be done "in house" or given to some other company to develop. BetaNews is reporting (http://www.betanews.com/article.php3?sid=1051741300) that Apple is indeed searching for Windows developers to bring iTunes to the Microsoft masses.
Apple software on a Windows platform hasn't always been the best, but it sure has to be better than the MMJB crap we get with the iPods. Hell, a dead frog is better than MMJB.

The big thing that 1.3 is "supposed" to have is full Audible support. Otherwise I don't think it is a big deal.

All-
I 'came across' the 1.3 Windows firmware update on another iPod site... I have been running this firmware release for just under a week now with no issues at all. All I have noticed thus far is the addition of AAC support, and the Backlight option on the main menu (kind of handy).
I uploaded the zip to my personal site found here:
iPod 1.3 Firmware Updater (Windows) (http://www.csh.rit.edu/~eriky/ipod/winpod13update.zip)
One note, when running the update it may say it is updating to 1.2.1, don't worry, it does update your iPod to the 1.3 firmware.
If anyone can host this on a better site (with better throughput) let me know!

call me a skeptic, but does anyone else find it the least bit suspicious that this guy comes 'out of the blue' with an update that is not even available on Apple's site? Tempie, tell us where you got this update, and also explain why it is only 2 megs when Apple advertises it as 5.2 megs ('cause its a zip?). Maybe I'm being overly wary, but I won't believe anything until Apple is the one to release the update, not some mysterious site.

Ive had the 1.3 firmware for a while, Ive just never installed it as no one else that Ive seen has used it. The file I d/l is 4.76mb and it does say 1.21 when you run the run .exe, although Im guessing it is 1.3. Here is the site I got it from, found this from someone at ipodhacks.com.

I can't really vouch for myself, I'm just an iPod owner who likes to be on the bleeding edge. :)
I don't really know if this is a leak or not, but it worked without a hitch on my Windows iPod. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
The original archive came from the Firmware Discussion page at the Mediafour Product Forums (makers of XPlay). Original Link here:

Well, i gave in and downloaded it... Its fine! As expected theres not much extra. Just a moved about menu and replaced with the backlight option which is fun for roughly 20 seconds. But hey, it says on the iPod 1.3 and it works fine so im not complaining.

I've updated my iPod with this firmware a couple of days ago and it works fine so far.
It isn't a leak, it is just the mac os 9 firmware that was extracted and put in a windows updater.

That is actually how all Windows iPod users got their updates before Apple made "official" WiPods.

It is illegal. It says in the updater for macos9 license that it is illegal to modify it, which is what happened...So you probably voided your warranty, but when official 1.3 comes out, update it again and who'll know:rolleyes:?

Ah i see, clever. Just a question, surely if its possible to do that, someone must be able to extract the version 2 firmware from one of the new iPods and put it into an updated file like that? Then we could all have 2! hehe.
Just a thought. Please dont yell if im being completly stupid!:)

I went ahead and installed it too. I was just waiting til a few others did to make sure it worked ok. The backlight on the main menu is nice. I really hated having to go through 3 menus to get to the backlight, turn it on for a few seconds, then go through it again to turn it off.
Try holding down menu for 5-10 seconds and walla your backlight should come on, or atleast it does for me.

yes, it does that for all the old-style iPods, yet I don't think that you should need to hold it down for quites so long.

Installed and everything works fine. Shows as version 1.3 and no problems. Only thing, I don't understand what this new backlight option on the main menu is supposed to do. When I press it, of course the backlight comes on, as it will anytime you touch the touchpad. But the light still goes off after the period of time specified in the settings, so what's the deal? What does this option accomplish?

Do you really think it's 80%? In my case it's 0%. I''m not being a prude. So much pirated stuff is poor quality. I remember seeing a poll on the other forum that suggested that it might be around 50%.

for me its probably around 50%-60%...i dont think you are a prude, im just giving folks a hard time...i am runing in to that quality thing now - missing endings, pops, clicks, static...Most of mine, i ripped when friends came over to me house and i just ripped their stuff... well i guess that is kind of the same as downloading it since i downt actually own the cd's but oh well...the menu button thing with the backlight is cool...the about menu is annoying since they moved it, but oh well...later...

Assuming 1.3 supports Audible on Windows Ipods, is there some trick to get Audible to play?
I downloaded and installed the 1.3 update talked about here, and everything seems to work properly. However, when I try to play an Audible download, nothing happens. The file name is there, but it just sits there when I click on it. The file plays fine on my PC using Audible Manager, and it shows in Audible manager (when the Ipod is connected) that the file is on the Ipod as well. In Ephpod, it shows up as an Audible voice file format.
I've never used Audible previously, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. I just scroll to the file name among the song list and click on it same as a song ... is there something else involved? How have people been playing Audible on Winpods previously (which I think I've heard can be done)?
Thanks.
so somebody plz tell me , now that i have 1.3 on my windows ipod how do i transfer aac files on it. xplay wont work!!

The new Ephpod (ie 2.70a) supports AAC files. Here is a link http://www.builderadius.com/ephpod/ephpod270a.exe

well if you download from kazaa then yes its not the best quality, but there are lots more places to download,
all my mp3s are 192 with lame encoding at least.. maybe the odd 128 ones

This update did not work for me. After running the update and moving my library back over, the iPod only showed a picture of a file folder when it restarted after I disconnected it.
Not sure if the update just didn't take properly or what, but I reloaded 1.2.6 and everything is fine again. Haven't had time to give it another go yet...

Still no luck. I tried again using the 'Update' button. Some of the folders were corrupt but I used EphPod to rebuild them. I can access the iPod through my PC with both EphPod or MMJB, but when I disconnect it, I only get the folder with exlamation mark icon.

I might try doing a quick-format if I were you. See if the the iPod comes up under explorer when you plug it in (right click on the iPod drive, and select "format"). If you are able to complete the format succesfully, then try to do a "restore" through the iPod updater.
