Using a debit card for internet transactions of any kind is generally considered a very BAD idea. If the card info were somehow compromised then whoever ends up with it has access to your bank account. As to whether or not it will work with iTunes, I can't say.

As mentioned, you can use a debit card. However, as slicky said, it's generally a bad idea to use a debit card online. Unlike credit cards with strong fraud protection, debit cards are much riskier.

My debit card has the Visa logo on it and I receive the same protections as a Visa credit card does.

"Worry free protection" is fine and dandy. Should the unthinkable happen with something tied directly to your bank account that's a whole 'nother level of pain that can lead to bounced checks and having to deal with Visa through your bank. You're still protected, but 48 to 120 hours worth of grief isn't worth it.
Get an amex or other proper credit card and pay it off each month.

This simply is not true for every bank. My bank offers the same protection that it offers with their credit cards. I would contact your bank first.
