Mini iPod and headphone distortion

How can I get the noise distortion off my headphones which are connected to my mini ipod I bought a few months ago..I thought the problem was the headphones and bought a cheap pair of 12.00 sony headphones, but when I apply slight pressure or more the headphone connector just a little, sound crackling or distortion i noticed..where/how can I fix this?..I did my research on this issue and found there were some thin connectors which only went to the motherboard which were held in place..so is this a defective product..can I get a new one replaced for free?

Wow! I purchased my Mini (from the Apple Store) in Oct 04, and when I called Apple about this before I purchased mine, they told me the problem had been "resolved". Just curious, when did you purchase yours?
