Problem with Aux-Pod in '92 Tahoe

I installed an Aux Pod in a '92 Tahoe with a 30gig IPOD. When it works, it works great -- full control, good sound, etc. The problem is that when I turn on the car and turn on the radio, the IPOD does not turn on -- I have to manually turn the IPON on most of the time to get it to work, or have to replug the connection to the IPOD to get it to work. I assumed that it was supposed to be seamless in this respect and that the radio was sufficient to control the IPOD.

I do have the cassette plugged into the AUX port on the IPOD and no cassette playing -- but again, the IPOD works fine. Is it necessary for the cassette to be playing? I don't need the deck -- can I just disconnect it and will that fix the problem?
