I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly. Are you talking about the SHN format tapers use to trade shows? The iPod can't read SHN files, you have to convert them to mp3's first.
Check out http://www.etree.org/ for information on SHN and tools to convert to and from.
And if you want to get your hands on loads of legal bootlegs in both SHN and mp3 format then check out the Furthur Network http://www.furthurnet.org/ - you'll find tons of Phish there.

thanks larry, i understand shn and further and mkw converter. but im not sure what format tappers first record to <wav or other> does it matter what file format i pod saves so long as it can be transferred to a cpu later for download and /or conversion. not depending on ipod to read files, but store and download later. or does ipod need to be able to translate the files like an mp3 only. in other words can ipod store any file type for retrieval later. as hard drive only. not to read the files. but save and transfer only... thanx for input jim

Tapers usually use wave files to transfer the recordings to a computer as it's the best quality. You'd also need the waves to burn to CD.
If you only want to store the shows or any other files on your iPod then it doesn't matter which format they are in. You can use your iPod as a normal hard drive. Just plug it in, open Explorer or My computer (if you're a Windows user that is ;)) and you'll see it listed as a new drive.
Hope this helps :)
