I loved the sound of the 71s, but I returned three pairs and ultimately gave up on them. They were fine when used with just the short cord, but the connection for the extension is horrible. I had problems with the extension on three pairs and gave up.

Were you only getting sound from the left ear? Did the sound go in and out at you plugged the cord in or wiggled it?
If so, then your problem is that didn't push the plug far enough into the extension. It is a VERY tight fit, which you have to push really hard to get all the way in. Once you do, the sound should come in fine from both ears.

Mine work fine. Like xluben said,they are a tight fit though.
If the extension is the problem but you like the sound then use 51's.

I went through two pair and said "That's it."
I figured if I kept buying 50 dollar pair of headphones... I could just save for a NICE pair.
Therefore, I have the Shure E3c's... And I haven't made a better decision (besides getting an iPod).
