...and let's just hope its not short lived! I finally got the friggin' thing to work and I love it. For those who are running XP and are having trouble this is how I overcame my problems.

I'm using a generic firewire card with VT6307 (via) chipset that XP instantly recognized.

I installed ephpod and ipod s/w updater.

I plugged in the ipod and it was recognized as my F drive however, ephpod could not build the necessary directories.

I then performed a restore through the updater and it froze at the end so I cancelled it. I then formatted the ipod at the command line: "format f: /fs:fat32" (this took a while... I have a 15gb model)

and.... VOILA!!!!!!!.... I was in business... and I haven't put the thing down.

Now as for some other concerns that I hope I can get some insight on:

1. My ipod turns get real hot. Is this normal? I'm concerned about the long-term wear and tear. How long should I keep it connected to the pc?

2. MP3 management. My songs are a mess on my player.... the reason being they are a mess on my pc. Can someone recommend a nice efficient program that I could setup my mp3's id tags properly (ie. genre, artist... title). I know you can do it through ephod but that only formats it for use in the ipod but doesn't leave them formatted on the pc.

3. Ipod accessories in Canada... ideally Toronto???.... reasonable prices are desired.

I have a few more questions... but I'll post them if I can't find the answers in other forums.

Thanks to all... man this thing is awesome.... :D

Congratulations on getting ipod going... still after that little crock of gold myself!

Just a quick question. After your reformat what did you do next? Use the software updater that came with ipid, or did you/can you go straight to ephpod?

Just asking in advace of me getting as far as the actual format as keep getting "Firmare failure. Disc write error" messages, plus PC refuses to format. Also got the dreaded folder and explanation mark message... so long way to go for me at the mo. :(

Cheers
Keith

hi incognito,
perhaps you've read my thread, and what my problem is. I tried to format it like you, and it said to me:
"Put a new disk in drive L:"
"and press ENTER"

I don't know if I translate it right.
Can you tell me how I could format my iPod?

But I think I will send it to Apple, I believe that they will get all right.

ciao, onezock

HI there. glad to see you're happy with your mp3 player.

Can I ask, what process did you use exactly to format the player? Is there a good guide on the internet? My player seems to be a little buggy and I might try it at some point if I get fed up enough with it.

cheers.

by your computer instantly recognizing your firewire card do you mean that it just said that it was there and working properly in your device manager or did you install software or run a driver installation? mine is said to be working but i never installed anything or ran any programs besides putting the card in and shutting the box

There are no drivers needed for Firewire doctorg. Windows has everything you need (XP at least which I believe you're running).

zpyder: No need to do a format in windows, just do a Restore w/the iPod updater. That formats the drive for you and builds a new clean iPod_control folder which contains the iPod's database among other things.

I installed the software updater and that's it. I started using ephod and that worked pretty good... but then I tried MC9 and the ipod works flawlessly with that! Its an awesome program.

Good luck!

Yeah, I know you can do that, it's how I've done it a dozen time sin the past ;)

I was just curious as Inc' mentioned something about formatting with:

"format f: /fs:fat32"

and thought that maybe if there's "another way" this might solve some of the issues I have *shrugs*

I had exactly the same problem with my new iPOD...
Even got a replacement from Apple!

How I fixed mine was do a quick format in Windows, followed by a hard reset, followed by a full system firmware update, basically you NEED to use the mains adaptor to do the firmware flash...... (Apple tech talked me thru the process..)
