I want to put, say, 10gigs of music on my 40Gig Ipod, then erase the tracks off I tunes, then load 10 gig more, then put on Ipod without losing the original tracks I put on. Can it be done?

My laptop only has 40 gigs, you see.

Thanks in advance.

I just bought an 120gb external HD and solved this problem

Unfortunately, not if you sync with iTunes. Delete a song from iTunes and re-sync, and it'll delete it from the Pod, too.

I don't know about transferring songs manually, though.

I have a 60 GB external drive on my desktop, and I keep my music on that. :D

You will have to turn auto-sync off in iTunes then you can use it to sync with your iPod. This is not recommended though (deleting songs off your hard drive) as you should have a backup of your music. Your iPod could have a problem and need to be restored, this would wipe your iPod clean. If you do this then all your songs are lost and you will have to re-rip everything. I would save up for an external hard drive before deleting everything, you can get a 80GB one for less than $100.
