Ok you lot. See if anyone can get this one.

I have a windows98, a 4gb ipod, and a 560mb shuffle.
Ipod and shuffle don't work on 98 so I downloaded a 98 diver.

Both shuffle and Ipod are recognised in explorer. The 98 driver works.

I use ePhod software to organise my tunes on my ipod as iTunes does not work on 98. This works fine but as Ephod does not work with the shuffle, I downloaded winamp with pluggin to organise my shuffle.

So far so good.

To get tunes from my ipod to the shuffle, I use the export function in ePhod to dump a whole load of tunes from the ipod to a drive on my PC. I then open up winamp, and bring in those tunes from the drive into my library. I then dump the tunes from my library to shuffle.

so far so good

BUT and here is the problem, some of the tunes, when loaded from my drive to winamp are losing their tag information and appearing as unidentified mp3s.

I write out their tags again, and dump them into the shuffle. I can play them from the shuffle via winamp, but as soon as i disconnect the shuffle, about 50% of the songs are not playing and it is as if i only loaded 60 songs instead of 120. They seem to disappear and yet i can still see and play them through winamp.

I am beginning to think that as shuffle and ipod are not meant for 98, then this is just an inevitable ghost in the machine and i should just accept it.

if anyone can help or sympathise, would be much obliged.

toby

ps if anyone needs a complete guide to how to get ipod working on 98, then will be happy to help.

I think those tunes doesn't "loose" their tag information - they don't have this information at all!
Remember, what you can see in iPod and Ephpod browsing iPod is iTunes Database, not tags from mp3 files.

I think you're out of luck.

It would probably be worth your time and money just to invest in a cheap $500 desktop or find out weather or not your computer supports Windows 2000 or XP. If it is an older system, I recomend Windows 2000, its definately a big improvement over Win 98, fewer system crashes.
