Ok guys, here's the scoop!

I have a 3g ipod and a laptop with only usb. I am able to use the ipod using the dual cable, with the usb side into the laptop and the firewire side into the included wall adapter. I've heard the 4g ipods are powered off usb, like any good device should be. (I say this because usb is everywhere, while firewire isn't) So I was looking around but couldn't find what I need, a dongle for usb to firewire power.

So, a dongle that goes into my other usb port and converts the 5v usb power to whatever the heck firewire is is what I need. Yes, I don't know squat about firewire, which is one of my problems... Anywho, what would be involved in making this, what does firewire take, and does this exist somewhere on the web already? Thanx a bunch, -Bill

i've never seen it, since it would be fairly useless to the rest of the world. firewire is faster, and apple computers have them and the ipod was designed around it. firewire is 12v.

you could get a firewire card for your laptop

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=39-101-110&depa=0

for $20

True - this is a very specific mod, only I would ever use it. Still, I would use it plenty, and I think that warrants a mod in MY case. Thank you for the info.

USB doesn't have enough available current to provide the power that 3Gs need, so it's going to be difficult to get it to work.
