i tried the winipod instructions from the sticky faq. but when i try to run it, a display reads "can't mount ipod." any help would be great.

I would reboot your pc and then try and dock your ipod again (or plug the cable in again if you do not have the dock).
Should be OK.
If not, you do not always need to mount the ipod using ipod manager, you could just look in my computer to see if the ipod is showing up as a removeable drive ( if you are on windows)
Let me know if you have tried these and will try to help further.

forgot to mention this is with 5gb ipod. i am not getting the ipod as a drive. however, ipod manager comes on. when i try to update it, to convert it to winipod using updater 1.2.6 i only have the option of restoring and not updating.

Not sure what you're trying to do exactly. Note, that if your iPod already has the latest firmware (1.2.6 for a 5 giger), then you won't be able to update, only restore.
If you're trying to convert a MiPod to a WiPod, again, you can only do a restore, not an update.
