I recently got a laptop that only has USB 2.0, and not FireWire. I had previously used my iPod on my other PC with a FireWire card. But in order to use my 30GB iPod on the laptop I bought the USB 2.0/FW cable that Apple sells.

My question/problem is, whenever I right click on the iPod Manager and say "Unmount," it still shows up in the Safely Remove Hardware box. The iPod unmounts fine, but it still shows there. Once I remove it from Safely Remove Hardware box though I can no longer "Remount" the iPod using iPod Manager unless I take it out of the dock and put it back in.

I liked it using FireWire where I could Unmount and Remount easily. I also notice that in the hardware box the iPod is merely called a USB Mass Storage Device, instead of APPLE IPOD or whatever it was called on my other PC.

Is there a way to have it correctly Unmount and Remount, or is that just the way Apple is having it work using USB?

Thanks.

Jon,

I have the same setup as you only mine is a 15gb. I can unmount my ipod and leave it in the dock, but I do not bother using the safely eject software at all. If I leave it in the dock and want to mount it again, then I do and all works well. If I want to remove it from the dock, I unmount in ipod manager and then take it out of the dock. The computer says that I have undocked something incorrectly, but that does not really matter. When I dock the ipod again, all is also well.

Cannot really help you with how the ipod shows up in the safey eject dialog box.

In summary, do not bother with safely eject IMHO. I never use it, only ipod manager and all works well.

Cheers,

Paul

Alright thanks. Just as a question though. Does your iPod using USB actually show up as an iPod in the Safely Remove Hardware box, or also USB Mass Storage?

It shows up as a USB mass storage device. In the description tray at the bottom, it does say it is an apple ipod.

I just have never worried about this before.
