I'm doing some CD shopping on eBay. Does anyone know what it means when something is marked as a "promotional copy"?
Are you shopping for rap music? If you are then Its probably a mixtape. Mixtape Dj's sell you the cd cover and you get the cd for free, which they call promotional material. its for legal purposes.

I don't know for sure on this in regards to CD's. However, a promotional copy DVD is typically released to those people that are going to review the movie. The person that is given the movie will then review it and the company releasing the movie will use their review for help in selling it (e.g. "Two Thumbs Up!"). The drawback to these movies are that several times while viewing the movie a message will display across the bottom of the screen stating that it is for promotional viewing only and it is not to be copied, sold, rented or redistributed. If a promotional copy of a CD is the same type of thing that a promotional DVD is then there is a good chance that a few times during the CD you may hear a message about it being a promotional CD. No way of knowing if that would happen during a song or in between songs.

Its basically a pre-release of the CD, and only 1,000 or so copies are printed and distributed to the press. Most contain songs that will be swtiched out when the actual release comes out.

Ah, I won an auction for a CD and then realized it said "marked as promotional copy on front insert".
Hopefully it won't be too radically different looking or composed than the final product.
Thanks.
