If the Harddisk on an ipod is defragmented (with the windows defrag program) will all my songs disappear?. I am wondering this because the iPod keeps a list of where all the music is stored (on the HD) and by defragging this they may dissapear. I am also concerned that the defrag program may not recognise the hidden mp3s on the drive and therefore not defrag properly. Any ideas (apart from resetting the ipod and loading everything on again)

I read somewhere that it's a bad idea to use Windows disk tools on the iPod drive. Though I'm not sure if fragmentation is enough of a problem on the iPod to warrant any solution.

Couldn't you just wipe the pod using Ephpod or similar then reupload?
Fragmentation would only occur if you were adding and deleting individual songs/albums from the pod anyway.

Just use the ipod updater to restore. That will completely clean your ipod up, and restore everything. I do it once every couple of months. Don't mess around with the windows approach, people have fried there ipods doing that.

To answer your question though, if you did defrag it wouldn't effect the iPod's database because that just stores the file path of each song. A defrag does not effect path names of files. C:\Program Files is still C:\Program Files after a defrag in Windows. See what I mean?

But, with that said. Since the iPod isn't getting used as a normal HDD, in that files aren't being written to it and erased from it frequently (well as frequently as with a normal HDD), you really don't need to do it.

Just do what Chris said. Do a restore once every month or so. It ensures nothing's messed up either on the HDD or in the iPod's database.
