Please forgive me if this in not the place to post this message. I have posted this message in the iPodlounge Forums > iPod Windows > Software section, but it seems like if it is not to getting any attention. Below is the message I have posted in the other section.

I am trying to convert one of my CDs from my personal collection into MP3 files. I am using the EAC and LAME convination.
I set the bit rate to 128 in EAC, but when EAC calls LAME for the compression it [LAME] converts the waves in to Variable Rate MP3s. I would like my final product to be at 128 and not variable.
Can some one please tell me if the actuall configuration has to happen in EAC or LAME. If it is in LAME, please tell me how 'cause this program is DOS based and dont have any idea how to configure it.

Or symply, can some one please tell me the configuration in EAC and LAME so I get 128 mp3s.

Thank you in advance.

If you'll go to the webpage:

http://www.ping.be/satcp/eac11.htm#-

It lists the parameters you'll need to insert in to "Additional Command Line Options" to get what you want. Depends on the version of Lame you have. Something like "-b 128 -m s -q 0 --lowpass 19.5." No quotes. Open EAC and press on F11. Then "External Compression".

Just curious, is there a particular reason reason you want 128Kbps MP3s?

85% of my music is compressed to that bit rate.

OK. But if you have a decent sized MP3 player, like say the iPod, there is no need to keep encoding your music in 128Kbps. You can use EAC/Lame to make awesome quality MP3s that aren't too much bigger than 128Kbps MP3s (considering we're talking about Gigabytes of room).

Check this instructional post:

Also compare a 128Kbps MP3 to an APS (--alt-preset standard) MP3 of the same song. I say the odds are good you'll be able to tell which is which. ;)

But if your happy with 128 then ignore my blabbing. :p

You know, I will take your opinion in to consideration. My music collection is not that big, but I am concerns that my 30 Gig ipod runs out of space. To be honest with you, I dont usually carry my whole collection at any point.
What bit rate would you recommend????

VBR mp3 is the way to go.

VBR is much higher quality than CBR. Use the switch "--alt-preset standard" without quotes, in the additional parameter box, in the compression settings section.

If you think it may be too much space.

--alt-preset 160

does a 160CBR rip, which is QUITE acceptable for all use.
