Hello.

I use Fedora C3 on my primary comp. but I still have my xp box up and running on an older machine...and use it only to sync my ipod via itunes.

I want to know if people in here are using gtkpod or Rhythmbox?
If so.. where do I post such questions?

Thank you
T

Not that I know of, you might want to wait more than 4 hours before asking the question again. Try it for your self and see if it works.

You didn't offend me, I was just trying to say you might want to wait more than 4 hours before "bumping" your thread. But now I see that there was 8 hours between your posts, sorry.

The majority of people here use windows and mac to sync the ipod. If anyone uses linux they will post if they're here in the forums. Some people visit only once or twice a week.

If it's an iPod/connection question then post it in the iPod section and if it's a computer question you can post it in the Lounge section.

I am running FC3 on my primary desktop machine also. . .but I am using XMMS instead of Rhythmbox (or however it is spelled).

GTKPod recogonizes the iPod just fine. . .and mine is Mac formatted.

Thank you Jack For your response...
and sorry to the community.. for my shortness ....

JackQT.
I have xmms and GTKpod. And I am getting an error getting GTK pod to read my itunesdb
I checked out the website for GTK and looked for a support group but found none... do you know of one?

Rythmbox 'feels' more like itunes to me than gtkpod.. but it will not sync ... but I have read out there that you can sync using GTKpod but use Rythmbox to make smartplaylists and the like

Botton line... do you know of a mail list or a forum for gtkpod?

Thank you
T

Also.. Jack... is the basic idea with GTKpod is that you
take the files from your ipod and populate GTKpod?
in other words for the first connection.. when GTK is empty you connect your ipod and then sync it .. and the song and date moves from your ipod to your hd and into GTKpod?
Thanks
T

Check out FedoraForum.org

I've only been using gtkPod for about a week, and I've never used iTunes, so I'm not even sure how they are different. . .

I use RH9 for iPod sync. I have no idea where people exchange programs running on Linux, so I decided to write own. Good luck in your search.

I run FC3, and GTKpod works fine out of the box. I've had trouble with Rhythmbox and I gather other people have too. I use it to organise music, but GTKpod to do the interaction for now...

You might find this useful:
http://mpeters.us/linux/linux_pod.php

And try the Rhythbox forum:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/rhythmbox-devel/

Hope that helps

I also write my own... I am currently writing a php script that will parse out data from the ipod db (or, more accurately, the GNUtunes DB created from the ipod's db), and populate a mysql db with the info.... then, i will be able to display interesting information about my ipod on a webpage, and what not....

Wow! Interesting I found this thread tonight. I too, am using Linux and just discovered these programs to make my Linux computer (Toshiba laptop, 2.5Ghz, Pent. 4, 512RAM, running Mandrake 10.1) compatible with my iPod Mini.

But, here's my big question. I have a TON of songs on my iPod already, and I wouldn't want to lose them as many were ripped from relatives'/friends' CD collections which I (obviously) don't have access too. I was afraid the iPod might need a reformating to use the new program. Does it?

If not, I'll download the RPM tonight and get goin'. If so, I'll make a backup of the song files in my Windows computer and transfer the music back to my Linux computer via USB drive to upload to the iPod once again.

Thanks for the help! Looks like a great community here, and I'm sure I'll be a frequent poster!

You should be able to use gtkPod to pull the old songs off onto your hard disk. . .that's what I did.

I ended up having to reformat to fat32 (word to the wise, DON'T UNHOOK THE IPOD W/O UNMOUNTING IT FIRST), but since I had pulled all the songs off earlier, I didn't lose anything.

Any good written program won't harm your iPod and its content. Some new iTunesDB formats can be incompatible with old, so for example if you have smart playlists created with iTunes or MediaChest, then other program can convert them just in regular playlists.

Edit: Actually I'm glad to see that more people starting using Linux. You can find almost any software for Linux, it's fast, reliable, and almost viruses free.

I would love for iTunes to come out for Linux, believe me. However, we are forced to make do with what we have, so I do little stuff that lets me at least play around with the ipod....

I have a script here (http://green.wezzul.com) that shows my itunes DB.... I am able to take the iTunesDB from the ipod, upload it to the server, and it parses out all the information... I used that GNUTunes class(?) to do alot of the work....
