playback distortion

Hi,
I just purchased an ipod; I'm using WinXP. I encoded files using Nero in mp4 vbr 140-190 kbps and uploaded to the ipod using ephpod. I can play the files on my PC and they sound good. When I play some songs on the ipod, ramdomly through some songs I hear a high pitched screech; same file played back on the PC works fine.

I'm new to digital music but I've done some reading. Is this what is called an artifact? Any idea why it would show on the ipod but not when played through WMP? What do I do to correct this problem? Thanks.

I also have the same problem on some songs. Mostly with songs that have some distortion (NIN and Bizkit) I also use MMJB and I have ripped my collection at VBR 76% (files end up around 176 bps). I now crank down the volume a bit, and turn off any pod EQ settings. It works a tad better now, but it is not consistent.


I have read that Apple had some major problems with Mp3's that were ripped using VBR. They claimed to have fixed it with the latest build (2.0.1 Release) but I suspect they still have work to do..
