Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hi, I'm quite sorry if this topic has been repeated elsewhere. I've browsed awhile without luck in finding help.

I've had to reinstall windows due to a computer failure. I have lost most of my music collection. My computer will not recognize my ipod so I can't get into ipod_control to copy my music files out. If I reinstall the ipod software, it will require me to plug in my ipod which results in all my music being deleted off the ipod.

Is there a way around this? I am aware that you can use your ipod as a volume...could I make a folder and copy music in there? Or will that folder get deleted also?

I have access to macs at school. But the space I have on the system at school is limited so copying my music there and returning it later onto my windows computer and ipod isn't a really good option.
Thanks!

If you look under Articles and Ipod 101 you'll find a step by step guide to do this.

I'm not sure which one you are pointing to.
Could you clarify?

Do I have to use software they mention there? I'd prefer not to. I just need my computer to recognize my ipod so I can transfer my music off it. Once that it done, I will reinstall iTunes and let it clear out my iPod.

Use ipod agent as has been suggested I resently bought a new p.c and used this to back up the ipod instead of loading 13 back up cd's ,worked a treat and is easy to use.
