how do i keep my ipod from automatically being in sinc with itunes?

i read that you import songs manually from itunes by going to Edit > Preferences... > ipod
and then checking: manually manage songs and playlists

but when the ipod is not plugged in, the ipod tab in the preferences is empty and it says: No iPod Connected.

once i connect the iPod, it immediately starts to sinc with itunes.

so what do i do? isn't there a way to turn off the auto sinc before i hook up my ipod to my pc?

Well, you could connect your iPod and let it go through one auto-sync cycle, after which you'll be able to change this option.

However, if you want to avoid autosyncing at all for some reason (ie, you've damaged or lost your iTunes library), then hold down CTRL-SHIFT while connecting the iPod and keep holding it until the iPod shows up in the iTunes source pane (it may take up to 30 seconds). This will prevent the iPod from autosyncing, and you can then go in and change the option to manual.

hold menu+select, then when you see the apple icon hold menu+back to go to disc mode, i think.
