I'm wondering if I could have playlists inside of playlists, or if I could have categories for playlists.

For example, I'd like a playlist category called "Car CDs" and then inside of that category I'd like to have 20 playlists called "Car CD #1", etc, etc...

Another example: I'd like to have a playlist category called "Video Game Music" and then have playlists such as "Final Fantasy Music", etc, etc...

Is it possible to do like I mentioned? I know I could set the genre and special comments and then filter on them, but I'd like to avoid creating 50 playlists and having them all in one big list...

Sorry, heirarchies can not be created...

HOWEVER!

Simply retag the music by Making all of your Video Game Music to have the Artist as "Video Game Music" then rearange the albums to what you what, like "Finaly Fantasy" or what not. This is a sneaky way to do it, but it works.

You can do this actually.

First create all your "Car CD #1", "Car CD#2" playlists, etc.

Then create a new smart playlist named "Car CD's".

Tell it to match the following conditions, change the first option to "Playlist", the second to "is", then change the third to the playlist, for example, "Car CD #1".

Repeat until you've added all your playlists. :)

Here's a picture of what I mean: http://www.ipoditude.com/archives/2005/01/did_you_know_a.php

Thanks for the link!

However, when I go to view my playlists, won't ALL of my Car CD playlists show up on main playlist screen, thus defeating the point of having a playlist category (or playlist of playlists...)

Yes, unfortunately. It's not really a hirarchy (Well it is, depending on how you look at it...)

All the contents of your other playlists will show up inside that playlist, but all the playlists will show up in the source list.

It may not be easy on the eye but it does what it's told... ;)

As far as I know it's not possible to have a true hirarchial tree in iTunes.

If he moves to sync selected playlists only he could build the car playlist in iTunes and sync that playlist to the iPod only. It would take some streamlining to your autosync process, but should work.

You could add a z to the front of the Car CD#1, etc to send them to the bottom of the playlist list and keep them out of the way as well.

Work arounds I know, but is all we have for now.
