Ipod will not 'restore'

Hi, I have a folder with exclamation mark and have been trying to restore my Ipod using the procedures outlined on the Apple website. I reformatted using windows XP formatting utility and this it did successfully. I can now open the "Removable drive 'E'", which is the Ipod in disk mode. Then I tried to restore using the latest updater for windows and ithe progress bar goes accross as expected. then a message comes up saying to wait while the Ipod restarts and completes the restoration. But the Ipod just sits there with a tick saying that i can disconnect but does not complete the restoration. I try to reset is and the ipod reststarts but just goes back to disk mode and does not have the software restored. Anybody have any ideas?

The restore process did not complete. If you have tried several times and the restore will not complete then contact Apple repair service and return it.
