Hi everyone !

Got my brand new Ipod today and offcourse I want to test it immediately , but I have a problem.

I 'm using a windows PC , chaintech apogee 7vjl motherboard and an usb 2.0 cable for the ipod.

I connect the usb cable to the front of my PC ( I have a frontpanel in a floppy drive slot with 4 usb slots ) & I connect the other end of the cable to my dock. I 'm planning to use ephpod which is installed , should I at first update my software from my pod or something ? I also tried the cd that came with the ipod ...

When I connect the usb cable I can see this pop up in windows (xp) I 'll have to translate as my windows is in dutch

"Fast usb device connected on a slow hub"
Usb device for masssaving is a fast usb-device.This device works at a slower speed if connected to a slower port.
"There are no fast usb hostcontrollers installed on this computer.
Then it also shows 3 pictograms of usb saying
"VIA rev 5 or later usb universal host controller"

I really don't know what's happening , my ipod screen says 'do not detach'. I 'm sure my motherboard supports usb 2.0 but I don't know if I have to download some application to make the usb ports work properly or something.
I 've never used this usb port only for a digital camera which has the same usb cable as my ipod's.

Please , please help me out

I am using USB 2.0 connection from my Dell on XP. It works fine - in fact, it is 2x faster than the firewire connection. Did you check your system device to make sure that it is a USB 2.0 connection? All I had to do was to plug in the ipod to the USB connector using the Apple USB/firewire cable.

I think the USB 2.0 driver for XP is in Service Pack 1 - if you haven't got this you'll need to dowload it from windows updates, or whatever it's called.

Alternatively you might not have USB 2.0 - look in My Computer, Manage, Device Manager, and look for USB Enhanced Host Controller - If it's there but with a red cross, try the above, if it isn't you'll need a USB2.0 card.

I think!

Grrr , I already have the service pack 1...
That can't be the problem.

Tnx for trying to help me out !

edit : right now , I managed to throw on a couple of tracks , at very low speed though (1mb/sec) , I used ephpod , but struggled to get it workin' because of the usb trouble. If I restart my pc and I plug in the ipod i again get the same error as stated in this thread ... I installed the latest software on my pc , but ephpod is not on my ipod manager list (should it be there ? )

Due to this problem I thought it would be best to format my ipod , so I did , again with some hassle (it took quite some time actually) again , I was 'told' by my pc I connected a 'fast' device on a slow usb hub or something... But if I play a track on my ipod right now , the 'text' which scrolls down the screen (song title I guess) is blinking in a strange way , rest of the menus seem normal ... I also had to put my contrast on minimum cuz if it was half of the bar , I almost couldn't read anything ...

Strange things happening

Your motherboard's VIA usb 2.0 host controller driver must be installed to enable high speed. Check this out :

chaintech support (http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/Support/qa_list1.asp?SPSNo=12&PISNo=138)

Good luck !!

the most important thing is you must check the motherboard of your computer, and read mother board guide carefully especially the part of USB port ,some motherboard support USB2.0,but infact they don't really has USB2.0 port already, and the guide will says "this motherboard support USB2.0,but you need buy something and plug on the USB2.0 extra-port on the motherboard, then you can use USB2.0,otherwise you only can use USB1.1 port on the motherboard already. there are some motherboard has USB2.0 port already ,and you can use it very easy, for me i have two computer and the one is microstar motherboard 845EMAX, this one SUPPORT USB2.0,but don't have USB2.0 port ,it has USB2.0 extra-port on it, and the other one is ASUS motherboard P4B533,this motherboard support and already has USB2.0 port on it ,so you can use it very easy and don't need buy anything more.

I could still need some help if anyone recognizes my problem ...
I installed the chaintech drivers , the xp usb2.0 drivers , ...
Problem isn't solved yet. Someone mentioned it might be a problem because of the 'Via' ? I 'm not a computer expert , so I don't know what to do.

Tnx to everyone who's tryin' to help me out !

There are a few things that could be stopping you using usb2.0

You need XP SP1
You need to install the latest via 4-in-1s available here http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300
You (might) need to install the via usb2.0 drivers from the motherboard installation cd (From the support site 'The driver is in the driver CD, labelled "Appogee".') I think that SP1 should include these drivers already, but it can't hurt to install them again ;)
Check that usb2.0 is enabled in your bios. Press Delete or Ins immediately after turning on your computer, then check in the 'integrated peripherals' section and make sure that usb1.1+usb2.0 is selected.

The other thing is that maybe the 4 front ports on your PC aren't USB 2.0 compatible. You could try plugging the ipod into one of the ports on the back to check. It's probably a good idea to do this first actually.

tnx mate !

I already got the Via 4 in 1s and the drivers from the apogee cd.
Now I checked that bios and I don't see any possibilty in integr periph. that enables me to enable usb 2.0.
Strange , just some 'usb keyboard' stuff or something ...

It could be hiding in a different place in the bios then. Or it might not even be there at all! Every motherboard/bios is different.

You could also try searching the google newsgroups to see if anybody else has had similar problems with getting usb2.0 working with that motherboard.

Have you tried using the usb ports on the back of the computer? It could be that the front mounting bay is usb1.1 only.
