Smart Playists andmanually managing the library

I have chosen to manually manage my iTunes library and what is copied to my iPod. My problem is that even though they are set for live updating, Smart Playlists I create never seem to update. My understanding is that they should update when I connect my iPod each time. This doesn't seem to work.

What am I missing here? Any tips? Auto-syncing my iPod to iTunes is not an option.

Smartplaylists only update if there is a change to the conditions.

So say you have a smartplaylist set to get all Rock songs, it will only add new songs to playlist after new songs are added to iTunes or the iPod.

In the case of manual update, you need to make the playlists directly on the iPod for best results instead of dragging from iTunes. Based on Smartplaylists with manual updating will only update based off of what is on the iPod, not what is in iTunes

A change in conditions, eh? Maybe that's what I was missing. I have been creating these directly on my iPod, though.
