I have a 40gb 4th gen ipod using itunes and xp. I got it for x-mas 04 and ive never got it to work correctly. It worked for about 2 weeks and now when i try, the updater wont stop it starts when i connect to my comp. any software i try to use stops responding when i connect. Its recognized in hardware profile, i have 1-11-05 update. one note: sometimes when i take it off the cradle everything speeds up again and i get the ipod info all n/a. the ipod itself says im up to date, remembers its name, version and all other info. ive tried all other software too, and they all do the same when i connect the ipod. Ive reset the ipod, reinstalled software, done everything, but still no ipod! I loved it when it worked, but im really turned off by all the problems. ANY HELP OR IDEAS GREATLY APPRECIATED. When it did work the process i used to add music and update it were as follows. Id open ipod updater first, wait for it to get ready, then id connect the ipod(ive tried iee & usb2.0). After it told me my ipods name, version and all that, itunes would start up, and my ipods name would be on it and itunes would start updating it. I think i was doing it correctly, but if not ANY help or directions would be great. PLEASE HELP!!!
I sometimes get cant mount ipod, needs updating. when i do get this far, when i try to update, it slows down again, and never connects or updates. Also if it helps, my computer is calling it G: removable disc? shouldnt it be ipod?

i've had nothing but trouble myself.

i've got a 20gb, so don't know if it's the same or not, but what I have to do with mine is this:

close all windows and have nothing plugged in. then plug in iPod and open iTunes after my computer beeps that it recognizes iPod. when iTunes opens, it automatically loads all my library and what not. It doesn't open automatically for me and i've never been able to use the iPod updater program. won't recognize iPod.

don't know if this helps. it's just what worked for me after a long trial and error process. good luck!

at least we know we're not alone.

I got the same problem. Everytime i plug in my 4g 20gig ipod my computer freezes and sometimes wont open my computer. i cant even format it. Whenever i pull out the usb cable the computer works fine and does everything i requested when the ipod was plugged in. i dont know what to do.
