Check out:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php

They have an archive of live concerts from "lesser known" artists, but there are quite a few gems in there: Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Tenacious D, Zwan, etc.

The files are in SHN format, which is a lossless format. That means you'll need broadband or the equivalent, because the song files are pretty large.

I've listened to about 25 songs so far, and they are all very high quality recordings. For example, Jack Johnson 2-10-02 show (Live At Santa Clara University) is fantastic.

You'll then need to convert to a compatible format if you want to transfer the songs to your iPod. To learn more about the SHN format, see:

http://www.etree.org/mkw.html

To make these easier for you, I'll post a loooooong list of artists that are currently available. The number is parenthesis next to each artists' name is the number of live shows currently available. However, please note that the number of artists and shows changes frequently, so if you don't see anything you like in this list you might want to check the website anyway, as it may have changed.

Edit: The list is going to have to be posted in segments because it's too long. So, the list will follow shortly.

Enjoy!

I found out about this site over the weekend. Like I said, I've listened to about 25 songs, but I haven't actually tried converting anything yet. I'm not sure how easy it will be, because I'm not sure what programs I'll need to do it.

I was using WinAmp to play the songs. WinAmp will work to play the songs as long as you download the SHNAmp plug-in. However, as far as I know, WinAmp will not convert them to MP3 or AAC.

If anybody figures out a convenient way to convert the files, please post here and let everybody know.

A very good resource, especially for Greatful Dead show, mainly because they not only allowed people bringing in recorders to their shows, but Garcia actually encouraged it!

As for your .Shn question I would suggest giving this (http://www.u2shn.com/shnfaq.html) a read. I would suggest using one of those programs and putting it into WAV format. Then I would burn it to a disc and use that as your primary source for listening to the show, unless you don't plan on getting many shows, or have a large HDD.. Each show will usually run you 800-1000MBs. Also if you do want to keep it digital I would suggest using WAV or FLAC as opposed to Mp3. Many traders do not like having shows in Mp3 format since:

a) They don't sound the best in a lossy format (these were amateur recordings and would be more sensitive in lossy than a studio recording).

b) Traders do not want these lossy shows being shared as it could threaten the existence of good quality lossless shows.

Good luck,

Good luck,

Thanks for that link. I'll take a look.

As for conversion, the only reason I'd convert the songs to MP3 is to listen to them on my iPod, not for trading.

I wouldn't suggest it, but it's your choice. I would use the .LAME encoder. Once these files are in WAV simply drag them in and use one of the --alt-preset command lines. If you need help with that give me a PM and I'll help you out. I would personally use "--alt-preset extreme" as the command line, that should produce some good sounding audio.

Good luck if you need any help just ask,

Ok, I read the information contained in Doug Gilmour's link. Here's a quote from the site:

How do I convert SHNs to MP3?

Whoa there, bucko. Before you do this, you need to make sure you are allowed to. Check the info file that came with the SHNs (you downloaded the info file too, right?). Usually there is something in there prohibiting you from converting the SHNs to MP3 format. Even if there is no such statement in the info file, you really should not convert the SHNs to MP3, because of the loss of quality, and the fact that once MP3s of a show start to be created, it becomes more difficult to find original, non-mp3-sourced copies of the show. If you do create MP3s from the SHNs, you should never distribute them (don't share them on Napster!), and you should never, ever use your MP3s to create a music CD.

So, be careful and make sure you are legally allowed to create MP3s. If you are, please abide by the wishes of the artist and do not distribute the music on P2P networks. Just rip them for your own listening enjoyment.

Here's a link to a program called Shorten by SoftSound. It allows you to create WAV files out of the SHN files so that you can make audio CDs.

I've read about this .LAME encoder and a lot of people on this board seem to use it, but I have no idea what it is or how to use it. In fact, your instruction of using an alt-preset command line makes it sound very confusing.

Why wouldn't you recommend making MP3s out of them? Sound loss? I guess I'll try it out and see how bad they sound. If they sound bad, I'll try to figure out this LAME thing.

It's mainly the recorder/seeder that gives these instructions, but you've got the right idea. The person that seeds (possibly the recorder) it usually leaves an info file in the folder and will often suggest not putting it in a lossy format.

Basically the quality loss. With some recordings the loss is more evident and with some it is barely noticeable. It all depends on the quality of the recording (crowd noise and seating area can affect this) and your ears. The LAME recorder using the --alt-presets is basically the best you can get your Mp3s to sound, that is why myself and others suggest it. Try it out your way first, if you aren't please then either ask me or go to the "Digital Audio Formats" forum, and ask for help setting the .LAME encoder up.

For most people, the difference between mp3/aac and LAME/LOSSLESS is unrecognizable, usually, the extra hd space that it takes up isn't worth it.

Again, these are not professional studio recording which have been remastered with new technology. These are amateur recordings using a recorder which someone brings in and tapes the show from their seat. Depending on the quality of the recording, this quality loss may be more evident, or conversely, less evident, and sound fine. It varies.

SoundConvertor seems to require a license for files that are larger than 500kb, so unless you are fine with getting a license it wouldn't be worth much for shows. 90% of my shows are in FLAC and so I have always used MacFLAC (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15883) to convert the FLAC's to WAV for burning the shows to CD.

A tip to anyone that is new to live shows. I believe I said that DAT recordings were the best around. I retract that statement, as Soundboard (aka sbd) are superior. Basically they are attached to the onstage mixer and have little to none of the static/fuzziness and general poor sound that other shows offer.

i found a good site for getting hold of metal bootlegs (concert recordings), it has a monthly metallica bootleg, a members section with about 10 metallica bootlegs for the loyal members of the forum, and if you go to the forum you can set up loads of trades (with bands other than metallica) with other people. I'm jimmeh on the forum as well:

The 4 Horsemen Site (http://www.4horsemensite.com)

but if you ain't into metal (metallica, iron maiden, that kinda stuff) there's not really much point in registering on the forum.

And just a thing, if you do register, don't spam cause its not taken kindly there...
