I picked my songs and then I loaded it my iPod 512mb shuffle and the total space listed was 492.5mb. Is there something wrong with my iPod? I am getting ripped off 20mb! Is this normal?

Plus I also want to know if I can use it as a drive for my homework and power point presentations and how to do it?

1) 492.5MB * 1024 = 504,320 bytes. Thats' about right, because there is a folder on the shuffle that stores data like the playlist and other shuffle settings that takes up a little bit of space.

2) If you're on Windows XP, look in your My Computer icon when your shuffle is connected, there should be a new drive letter. Drag your homework and power point presentations to it.

Read your instruction manual, it says it all how to use it as a drive.

no you're not getting ripped off. you have to remember that on the drive, the shuffle's operating system has to take up some room.

Another thing to remember about the total capacity of your MP3 players, including any iPod:

1MB = 1 million bytes, 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.

In other words, the space on your iPod is calculated based on a nice, round number of 1 million bytes per megabyte; your computer will use a slightly less-round number. There are 1024 kilobytes in 1 megabyte, but Apple does not use this type of calculation in advertising storage space on iPods.

As mentioned above, the operating system (OS) on an iPod will take up some extra space.
