There is a cool little underground of strange and unusual music: from 50s 'exotica' and 60s Space Age bachelor pad music, through contemporary spins on the outsider theme.

http://www.oddiooverplay.com/ : Oddio Overplay is a good place to start. Besides hosting a few original albums to download for free, it also provides a wealth of links to other sites.

http://www.comfortstand.com : Comfort Stand Records is a net label with a growing (around 50+) catalog of totally free music. I recommend starting with CSR 001: "Two Zombies Later," a compilation of ... well, it's a compilation, and it's got tiki heads all over the cover, nuff said?

http://www.basichip.com/ : Basic Hip Digital Oddio is almost self-explanatory. Or not.

http://www.sabadabada.com/music.htm : Brasiliana - a treasure trove from the bossa nova craze of the 1960s, worth a visit just to browse the covers

http://www.projekt.com/projekt/audio.asp : All right, well, this is a change of subject, but Projekt is a terrific goth/darkwave label with lots of free mp3 samples on its site, plus some bargain-priced samplers to order. Check out the band called Unto Ashes.

http://www.kittyspit.net/erik/mp3/linkpage.html : This is the MOTHER OF ALL MP3 LINKS SITES. Mr Brown maintains an active list of free and legal music sites of every imaginable genre -- House/Groove to Eastern Orthodox/Byzantium, No Wave to Medieval/Renaissance Revivalist. Must be seen to be believed.

HA!! No kidding on the seeing to believe. Just a few genres from the site:
primative psych-garage
mid-1970's Swedish jazz
performing in a 2-million-gallon cistern
symphony for dotmatrix printers

and, my favorite after a quick scan

The First Vienna Vegetable Orchestra has been creating instruments solely out of vegetables.

I haven't heard any of these songs yet, but I'll be sure to check them out. Mainly out of sheer curiosity, because my vegetables don't make much noise.
