I just discovered that if you manually drag music to your shuffle it will not convert it to 128 AAC like it does under Autofill.

On your shuffle, there is a hidden folder called iPod_Control, inside there is a folder called Music and then in there folders numbered F00, F01 so forth. Each one has music in it. You can see the autofilled songs as .mp4a timestamped to your Autofill time, the manually added files will be in their original format (.mp3, etc) with the timestamp from your computer.

Probably good to know if you're manually dragging music to your shuffle and wondering why it's taking up so much space.

And also now you know where to copy music off of your shuffle from. :)

I don't know about hidden, whenever I autofill my Shuffle I get a window opening showing me the iPod_control folder without even wanting it to!

You must have the show hidden files option turned on then.

Damn that sucks... So if I want to add a new song I have to manually convert it first??

If you want it in AAC 128, looks like it. Or use Autofill.

I thought that when you load a CD in i-tunes it defaults the tracks to AAC 128? Is this true? And if so, would it mater if you if you use autofill or manual to create your playlist and sync to your ipod? Or maybe I don't understand the original post.... ????

Not everyone imports CDs using that setting. Or even uses iTunes to import with. (EAC + LAME).

I use autofill and it doesn't convert my songs. You have to set it to convert,it isnt an automatic function of autofill.

Yes I know. Even with the "Convert to 128 AAC" checkbox checked, manually dragged songs to the shuffle do not convert. It is purely an Autofill option only.

So in other words - for me to assume that my songs are automatically converted to Convert to 128 AAC is incorrect? So my 1G shuffle will not hold 240 songs????? How many songs will it hold? Right now I have about 80 on my shuffle.

I'm not certain about this whole conversion thing??? Is there any way that they will convert to 128 if I use manual?

If someone can clarify this that would be great!!!!

Thanks
